Splash and Dash Regatta 2012

25 February 2012 - Westhaven Marina, Auckland

This regatta was new for the Waikato Treasure Chests.  It was a half-day regatta organised by the Auckland Dragon Boat Association.  We were one of two teams from outside of Auckland that competed at this event.  There were two divisions - Super 12 and 20 (full boat).  We raced in the full boat division with a crew of 18 and Dad (our coach) as the sweep.

The weather was overcast and windy with an odd light shower.  Dad had a tough time sweeping in the first race, trying to avoid the boats moored in the vicinity of the start line.  We had to dismantle our gazebo midway through because of high wind.  Amidst all that, we managed to practice our team chant.  It was Michelle's and Denise's first regatta.

We came in third in our two initial races and second in our final.  The Paddler of the Day Awards went to Pauline (survivor) and Kartina (supporter).  Katrina had to step into one of the stroke seats and did an awesome job along with Astrid.  Thanks to Maria, Robin and Emie who helped bring our numbers up to 18.  Also thanks to Graham who took lots of photos of us.

The regatta finished around 1.00pm with an after function at a nearby restaurant.  It was a pretty relaxed regatta. It was great to get more racing experience.  We had some time to spend in Auckland shopping or visiting and had an early trip home.  Definitely worth considering to participate next year.

Hamilton Dragon Boat Regatta 2011

3 November 2011 - Hamilton Lake, Hamilton

We had a great day and everyone enjoyed being out on the water, even when the weather decided to be a little unpredictable. Linda had already put the tent up, which we were all really thankful for, especially when it was absolutely pouring with rain.

We were involved in 5 races, which included a Breast Cancer Survivor race. Because we do not have enough breast cancer survivors in our team and thanks to Rosa’s quick organisation, we borrowed a few BooBops members to fill our boat.  It was a good race and about half way down the 250metres, the heavens opened and torrential rain poured down which made the race just that little bit more interesting.  The BooBops from Tauranga was the overall winner. Congratulations BooBops - you were fantastic and inspiration to us. The highlight of the day was the flower ceremony which always moved hearts and sheded tears. We remember our friends and loved ones whom we have lost to breast cancer.

A HUGE THANKS to our supporters and Dad for standing out in the rain cheering us on, you guys are amazing. At the end of the races, we nominated Amanda - Paddler of the Day! Congratulations Amanda, you very well deserved it!  More photos click here.

Waikato Breast Cancer Trust Pink Walk 2011

30 October 2011 - Hamilton Lake, Hamilton

At 10.00am we met up at Innes Common and welcomed Rae Keightley, Helen McLaughlin, Julie Boswell, Megan Jones, Pip Simpkin, Judith Baxter from the BooBops team in Tauranga.  Our paddlers/support were Jasmine Allett, Jenny Ballantyne, Marie-Therese Borland, Pauline Bryant, Mars Hassall, Jill O'Reilly (our own pink angel with personal halo), Rosa Peake, Alana Ratcliffe, Pam Rastrick, Judy Roper, Loryn Scanlan, Julene Sheeran, Lynne Soepnel, Astrid Van den Berg, Anna Whitehead and coach/sweep 'Dad'.   We were fortunate to have the Yacht Club rooms to change and have lunch.

Today was good exposure for our team along with pamphlets given out from the Pink Walk tents.  We looked pretty smart with our new lifejackets and the BooBops added a bit of 'pink' with their crocheted hats. It was a perfect day for the Pink Walk, not too hot, not too cold, no rain, no wind.

Our training started with a warm up with Marie-Therese. Thanks to the BooBops we now have an easier way of numbering off, so much easier for us to remember if we should ever capsize.  Then it was all Power, Power for nearly an hour on the water.   We let go 7 pink balloons to remember our WTC sisters who have passed on.   The walkers were a colourful sight around the lake and we hope the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust raised many dollars today. Well done to paddler, Jasmine, for all the money she raised in the Pink Challenge. Thanks again to Dad who kept us on track today and Rosa and Julene for being our 'front ladies'.   More photos click here.
